Written by Taylor Woosley, Staff Writer. 12-week supplementation of 12 g of 6 non-essential amino acids (alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, proline, and serine) resulted in improved VAS, JKOM, and JOA scores, suggesting that the treatment group experienced improved joint pain, discomfort, and stiffness both in a resting state and during normal activity.  (more…)

Resveratrol May Significantly Improve Serum Levels of Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides and Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol

Written by Taylor Woosley, Staff Writer. Results of the dose-response meta-analysis including 17 RCTs show that resveratrol supplementation significantly decreased TC (p < 0.001), TG (p < 0.001), and LDL-C (p=0.038). Furthermore, results from the sub-group analysis show that a more significant reduction of LDL-C was observed in trials with a duration of 12 weeks.  (more…)

Pycnogenol® Relieves Symptoms Related to Restless Leg Syndrome & Improves the Venoarteriolar Response

Written by Taylor Woosley, Staff Writer. 4-week supplementation of 150 mg/day of Pycnogenol significantly improved Visual Analogue Scale Line scores (P<0.05) and significantly decreased levels of oxidative stress (P<0.05). Furthermore, subjects in the Pycnogenol® group had a significant (>15%) increase in venoarteriolar response.  (more…)

Vitamin D Supplementation Reduces Depressive Symptoms in Subjects with Major Depressive Disorder

Written by Taylor Woosley, Staff Writer. Significant findings of this systemic review and meta-analysis of 41 papers with a total of 53,235 participants show that subgroup analysis in participants with clinically relevant depressive symptoms (including subjects with MDD) yielded a moderate effect favoring vitamin D supplementation (Hedges’ g = −0.604, 95% CI −0.802 to −0.406, p < 0.001, I2 = 78.4%).  (more…)

Vitamin D3 Repletion Improves Vascular Function and Reduces Full Length Osteopontin in Vitamin D Deficient African American Subjects

Written by Taylor Woosley, Staff Writer. Monthly supplementation of 100,000 IU of cholecalciferol was associated with a 2-fold increase in vitamin D levels, from 17 ± 5 ng/mL to 35 ± 7 ng/mL (p < 0.0001) after 12 weeks. Serum levels of log transformed flOPN were significantly reduced (p=0.03) and log FGF-23 was increased in the treated group (p = 0.04). (more…)

Omija (Schisandra chinensis) Extract and Soybean Mixture Improves Glycemic Control in Hyperglycemic Subjects

Written by Taylor Woosley, Staff Writer. 12-week supplementation of an Omija extract and soybean mixture capsule resulted in significant improvement in plasma glucose levels compared to baseline (p=0.002, 0.023, 0.041). Furthermore, OSM subjects experienced lower insulin levels and insulin AUC compared to placebo, even after adjustment of the baseline (p=0.006, 0.011).  (more…)
