There is universal agreement that getting more fiber in the American diet is needed. The Daily Value recommended by the FDA is 25 grams per person per day but the HANES Survey shows that the average intake in the USA is only 17.8 grams for men and 14.1 grams for women. For teens, the results are even worse. Compared to the recommended servings of three whole grain servings per day, only 11% of males and 13% of females get even one serving per day. Fiber is available in both soluble and insoluble forms and there are benefits to both.
