Research Review Shows Benefit to Protein Supplementation in Diet

By Greg Arnold, DC, CSCS, December 3, 2012, abstracted from “Protein supplementation augments the adaptive response of skeletal muscle to resistance-type exercise training: a meta-analysis” in the December 2012 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.  A large review study of 680 patients between the ages of 19 and 72 assessed the benefit of taking protein supplements during a weight training program. After 12 weeks, protein supplementation increased fat-free mass an additional 1.5 lbs, increased slow and twitch muscle fibers, and increased strength by an additional 30 pounds.   Posted January 29, 2013.
